What is a cash account?

In short

Cash is the account type for current accounts, savings and cash on hand. There's no separate type for a household cash box. You only use Other for loans or memberships.

Manual cash account

  • You book Actuals on this account. Booking on Actuals opens a new row. The account is required on every row.
  • The account value is the booked net (income minus spending) until you set a starting balance or import a statement with a closing balance.
  • Bank name and IBAN are optional. Leave them out, for example for a travel kitty.

Connected cash account

  • The bank provides the balance. The account value is the bank's latest figure, not the sum of 90 days of bookings.
  • A manual Actuals booking as a correction doesn't change the bank figure.

Cash at a broker

A broker's available cash (for example eToro) is a sub-account in Activity, not in Actuals.

Don't switch a cash account that has Actuals to Other or Depot. Connected accounts keep their type so new data lands in the right place.
