You attach a read-only account key (zpub) to a BTC wallet account. Westara uses it to read balance and history from the blockchain, without ever seeing a private key.
Steps
Under Accounts, create or open a BTC wallet account.
Choose Connect watch-only.
Paste the account zpub exported from your Bitcoin wallet. A zpub is preferred (native SegWit, addresses start with bc1q). ypub and xpub work too. With an xpub, Westara asks for the address type.
Sync.
Never enter
Your seed phrase, private key, WIF or xprv. Westara rejects them. Westara isn't a wallet: you can't send or sign with it.
What applies afterwards
- Westara stores the zpub encrypted and only shows a short fingerprint.
- The on-chain balance determines the open BTC quantity. Every Bitcoin transaction becomes a row in Activity.
- Incoming transactions are valued at that day's BTC/EUR rate, so only approximately. Outgoing transactions don't count as sells.
- After the next sync, manual rows don't determine the quantity. The blockchain wins.
Without a zpub
On a manual wallet, book an opening balance or buys in Activity with the ticker BTC.
Disconnecting
Removes the stored zpub. You can optionally remove the automatically imported rows as well. Manual Activity rows stay.
Feel free to keep long-term holdings and small spending balances under separate account names.

- How do I set the opening balance and cost basis on a Bitcoin wallet? It depends on how the wallet is connected: a watched wallet doesn't need an opening balance, you only adjust the amounts of incoming transactions. A manual wallet gets an opening balance.
